If your website needs a new look, you may start looking for a web designer to come in and give you a face lift. But before you fork over a few hundred dollars, think about what you can do to get a site makeover for less.
Get a New Theme
A new theme can totally change the look of your site. To take Jellyfish Web from boring to eye-catching, we used one from D5 Creations that we found by searching in our WordPress dashboard.
There are some fantastic premium themes as well that allow for a lot of customization. We recommend StudioPress Themes with the Genesis framework.
Change Your Settings
Have you thought about trying a new font? Switching to full posts or partial posts? New colors in the background? Sometimes it’s the simple stuff that can do the most. You’ll find most of these settings under the “Settings” tab in WordPress or in your theme’s settings.
Update Your Sidebar
New widgets can go a long way to putting a little pizzazz on your page. Try doing a plug-in search for something you’d like to add, like your Instagram feed or an About Me widget.
You can do a lot by yourself without a professional, especially if you know how to use simple editing software like Picmonkey. We recently made our own social media icons on Don’t Mind the Mess thanks to this awesome tutorial. You can design yourself a whole new header with just a little time and Picmonkey’s free tools.
Get Your Design A La Carte
Instead of paying for a full redesign, get individual pieces for less. Get a new logo or a new header and then use that new scheme to reorganize your site.
We had a great experience at 99Designs where you can get a whole bunch of designers giving you options. You can poll your friends to see what they like. And if you don’t like anything, you get a full refund.
